Grant and Lee: a Study in Contrasts
Civil War has change the US in a lot of different ways. Basically, the old country has been reduced to ash by all the fighting, and out of it the new, better country was born. Many research paper services will describe how the war itself was long and bloody, with thousands people lying dead on various battlefields. We still deeply remember the tragedy that left burnt villages, and towns full of rabble. But who was in charge of this mess?
“Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrast” – is a work written by Bruce Catton. He compares the leader of the Northern armies, Ulysses S. Grant, and the leader of the Confederation – Robert E. Lee. Two men who were praised for being incredible generals, have clashed together in a long and bloody war. The bloodiest war in American history, in fact. For five long years, they have tried to outsmart one another and figure out a way to beat the opposition.
Bruce Catton describes general Lee as an incredibly old-fashioned man. He was raised in Virginia with a strong belief, that people cannot be all equal. He was a strong supporter of an idea that certain races are fit to rule while everyone else is better off serving. No wonder, Lee embraced the Confederacy and fought so vigilantly for it.
On the other hand, Grant was raised in the North and believed that the equality of everyone is a very achievable goal. He was a commander who believed in his ideas no matter what. Even in the most dangerous situations, he was never giving up on the Union and led Northern armies to numerous victories.
Grant and Lee are both remarkable people in our history. We should always remember them for what they were – great generals who always followed their beliefs.
